To get a full description of this course curriculum and see examples of student work, we would recommend you download the digital prospectus on the right side of this page. The curriculum details are also listed below for your convenience. Essentially, there are 20 lessons in this course, which are grouped together under the following collection of modules:

The elements of fashion and style
Though some people have a natural sense of style and flair, the right training can teach anyone how to develop an “eye” for the details, and this is the key to ongoing success. This course will introduce you to the individual components of style and design, and it will teach you to recognise how those components work together in creating a successful or unsuccessful look, as the case may be. This understanding will enable you to deconstruct and reconstruct different styles effectively, regardless of your own personal preferences, and it will give you the vocabulary and industry terminology to communicate with others confidently and knowledgably. In addition to working with clothes and outfits, you will also learn how to select visual props, backdrops and accessories that appeal to specific audiences, communicating a “fashion story” that entices people to buy. This technique can be used to present your styling ideas in a persuasive and enticing way, to achieve success both for your clients and yourself!

Topics covered include the following:

  • Assessing styles and trends – defining the details and features that characterise a style or trend
  • The elements of style – the individual components of style and how to use them
  • Achieving visual balance – using symmetry and asymmetry to achieve harmony and balance
  • Building a mood – using the right combination of elements to create the mood you want
  • Developing a fashion story – what it is, why it’s important and how you can write your own
  • Visual persuasion – achieving congruency by picking the right details for the
  • story you are trying to tell!
  • Photography – the essentials about photography and working with photographers

Individual analysis
Kate Moss has a “rectangular” body type, Jennifer Lopez has a “pear” shape and Catherine Zeta Jones is definitely “hourglass”. All of these famous women have completely different body shapes, yet they each know how to make the best of what they have and present themselves in the best possible light. As an Image and Fashion Stylist, your role is to help every client develop a style that makes them look and feel great. However, before you start advising clients on what to wear, you must determine their body type, proportions, facial shape and skin tone. You will begin this module by learning how to accurately identify bodily characteristics, and which clothing details and combinations will enhance or detract from these natural features.

Topics covered include the following:

  • Body types – identifying your client’s overall body shape
  • Features and proportions – how to balance proportions and restore a sense of symmetry
  • Facial shapes – how the facial outline and individual features determine facial shape
  • Colour analysis – assessing your client’s colouring and the appropriate colour palette for their skin tone

Working with colour
Colour is a key element of visual perception, so understanding how to work with colour is vital to success in the image and fashion industry. Whether you are working with inexpensive ranges from high street chain-stores or top designer labels and haute couture clothing – colours that clash create a cheap and garish effect, while the right colour combinations can produce stunning results . Whether you are putting together an outfit or coordinating a range of outfits against backdrops for a fashion show, the key to success is knowing how to achieve a harmonious balance between the colours of the clothes themselves and accessories. Developing skill in this area alone will help you to become highly sought after.

Topics covered include the following:

  • Colour combinations – understanding how to create great colour combinations every time
  • The Colour Wheel – what it is and how it can work for you
  • Colour characteristics – using colour to disguise, emphasise or achieve special effects
  • Simultaneous contrast – how to make any colour look good
  • Light and colour – how they relate to each together and special considerations
  • Working with colour – choosing the right approach for an individual project

Clothing and accessories
Many people think that image and fashion stylists helppeople to dress “correctly” for work, selecting the “right” suits and accessories to make a strong business impression. While some consultants certainly specialise in “Corporate Dressing”, the majority will work with clients to develop a style that makes them look their best. Furthermore, the style should be appropriate for the client’s lifestyle on a practical level, and reflect their unique personality and character. With so much choice in clothes and accessories it is easy for the untrained person to get it wrong, but this module will show you what to look for and what to avoid. You will learn how to develop a core wardrobe for male and female clients, and use selected accessories and details to update this with each new fashion season. Once you have completed this module you will know how to use clothes to bring out the inner beauty and confidence in all your clients, and help them to be themselves in a way that makes the rest of the world take notice!

Topics covered include the following:

  • Developing a core wardrobe – how to create a wardrobe that works for your client’s features and lifestyle
  • Strategic planning – transforming a wardrobe step-by-step without breaking the bank
  • Accessories – paying attention to the details that many people are judged by
  • Making trends – using accessories and details to re-create a trend or start a new one of your own!
  • Colour and pattern – how to use them to make impact without overkill
  • Developing a style – how to bring out your client’s natural style and sense of self

Hair and make-up
Make-up transforms a woman’s face immediately, yet relatively few women ever learn how to apply make-up professionally, and even fewer know how to choose the products and colours that complement their natural tones and skin-type. There are numerous different make-up styles and looks, and knowing which approach is appropriate for your client is just as important as knowing how to apply make-up professionally. You will also learn how to use hairstyles to complete a client’s “look”, helping them to appear taller, slimmer and even younger. Furthermore, hairstyle and grooming techniques are just as important for male clients as they are for female.

Topics covered include the following:

  • The essentials of skincare – identifying skin-types and how to keep them in the best condition
  • Expert make-up techniques – how to apply make-up professionally
  • Getting the right tools – investigating the right make-up and hairstyling products
  • Hair – determining the best colours and styles to enhance your client
  • Grooming – the important details for men and women

Professional practice
When clients are paying for style, thy will expect you to get it right first time. This might seem like a tall order, but there is a tried and tested method of working that enables you and your client to envision the end result quite accurately, creating a formula for repeated success. The ability to visually communicate your ideas is the only way to determine that everyone understands the creative direction for a project, and it can also help you to sell your ideas to clients in a way that communicates both professionalism and creativity. You will also learn how to price your services and will receive a number of forms and templates that you can adapt for future use in the industry.

Topics covered include the following:

  • Tear-sheets and storyboards – the language of the fashion styling industry
  • Mood and concept boards – the essential way to visually communicate your styling ideas
  • Testing – ways to build practical experience, your confidence and your portfolio
  • Writing captions and briefs – the essentials of what you need to write and how
  • Contracts and paperwork – dealing professionally with clients and suppliers
  • Presentations and PR – presenting yourself and your portfolio appropriately to different audiences
  • Pricing strategies – how and what should you charge a client?

Final project
At the end of the course, you will be asked to complete a Final Project, which will involve designing and communicating your original image and styling ideas in response to a brief. This project will bring together everything you have learned throughout the course, giving you the opportunity to fully integrate the various skills and knowledge, so that you can demonstrate a rounded and holistic approach to image and fashion styling. Receipt of the Limperts Academy Diploma in Image & Fashion Styling will acknowledge your proficiency and skill as in this area and will give you the confidence to pursue your new career with vigour!
