Meet the team

Hello Everyone,

And welcome to the January/February student support online. I hope everyone had a relaxing Christmas break and you are ready to get stuck into more fantastic design work.

As we enter into the new year let us firstly reflect on 2008, a year that was very focused on sustainability in the context of design and architecture. Towards the end of the year we had come to realise that not only is sustainability a big factor but design appeals to the human wish for identity, uniqueness, status and luxury and it also strives to  address the needs and problems that afflict our society as a whole. Refer to the list “Trend in Home Design” in Latest Trends section of the Interior Design online support.

It is important to take into account the social and economic influences that affect design so that we can design with a certain amount of foresight thus ensuring that our designs are functional and respectful of the needs of the people.
Considerations of this type allow us to become clued in as designers and keep one step ahead of the posse. It also allows us to become honest designers, addressing the genuine needs of a society as opposed to designing just for the sake of our own status, financial standing and ego's.

When studying the history of design we learn about certain inspirational and influential movements that created changes in design. It is important to get a good understanding as to what inspired these movements in terms of
Social, political and economic climates.

A good example of such a movement was The Victorian Era. The Victorian Era held its position in history from 1837 to 1901. Britain was being ruled by Queen Victoria whom instilled in her people a sense of pride so strong that you could almost say that it was arrogant thus setting the social scene of the time.

Politically and economically this was a long period of prosperity for the British people, as profits gained from the overseas British Empire, as well as from industrial improvements at home, allowed a large, educated  middle class to develop. The influences of the Industrial Revolution meant that mass produced items became more accessible to the middle classes.

All of the above combined meant that the style of Interiors became very ecclectic and ostentatious as it became important to show off what you had and just how much you had. From this quick insight into the social, political and economic climates of the time we can understand why Interior Design was styled in such an over the top  way.

As an up and coming designer you must become aware of all these outside factors and how they influence design.

So as we enter 2009 open your eyes and ears to all and become universally aware!!
